Howard Stein began working professionally during first years at Johannesburg College of Art in South Africa. Designed posters for plays, music concerts. Designed packaging for health products. Studied Industrial Design and Graphic Design. Graduated First Class. Attended Art Center College of Design in California. Moved to New York. Freelance clients included New York Magazine, Esquire, Rolling Stone, New York Times Publishing, Revlon, Estee Lauder, Bergdorf Goodman among others. Worked full time at WNBC-TV as a graphic artist for the nightly news. Very fast, and pressured environment. Created identity for Swing It Again, for NBC Enterprises, Count Basie's last live show. Worked with the New York Institute of Technology as a consultant on early computer graphics programs, the Images II Paint system. Freelance work continued. Began painting very large abstract canvasses. Moved to South Africa continuing with fine art. Group and solo exhibitions followed, and his work hangs in corporate and private collections in eight countries. Returned to the United States and worked as art director for Silverlight Productions, a multi media company in Newport Rhode Island. Created a complete rebrand of the company, in addition to art directing all client work. Began designing repeating patterns and moved back to New York. Founded DOON LLC. Continued using the name Howard Stein. Created illustration and graphic design for various clients. Now engaged in a series called Portraits of Power, carefully characteristic portraits of people in power, people of power — as an alternative to photography. Loves working with typography and the English language with a twist. IEnjoys making work that is flat, strong and graphic, light in weight for fast download to web and mobile.
